As the legend goes, evil roamed the earth as a horrible beast until it came upon a young Ukrainian girl writing pysanky (decorating eggs). The pysanky were so powerful that the evil incarnate was chained in a dark cave. When pysanky are not written, the chains begin to loosen but as long as people continue to write the chains become stronger and tighter. With the invasion and horrific war going on in Ukraine, let us hope that this ancient artform will continue to flourish and spread not just among Ukrainians but all over the world! Evil certainly must be constrained.
Instructor and Optimist member Janice Cuckovic was so impressed by how quickly these (mostly) complete beginners picked up the batik dying process, producing creative and beautiful eggs! All proceeds after materials has added to our club's financial donation for humanitarian aid in Ukraine..
