We were honoured to be a part of today's official dedication of the community tennis courts, 25 years after their installation, now named the 'Bill and Connie Graham Courts' after the couple who spearheaded the whole endeavour and gave so generously to make it happen. It's an inspiring history to know all of the people and hard work that went into making these courts, now enjoyed by so many, a possibility. Our club was instrumental in presenting two significant fundraisers which provided funds not only to complete these courts, but also benefitted the Volunteer Fire Department and the Jaws of Life. Much thanks to David Shaw whose recently written history of how the courts came to be inspired Catherine Jonkhans and Liz Place of the Port Franks Tennis League to push for the official recognition of Bill and Connie Graham and the installation of signage. Kudos to Council members for approving it, and to Ashley Farr (Director of Community Services) for expediting the whole process. The dedication was well attended by Mayor and Council as well as representatives from the Tennis League, our club, Graham family members and friends, and community members. This document presents the story of how these two courts, that are so actively used and supported by residents of Port Franks and surrounding communities, got started – the idea for their undertaking, the persons who worked to make it happen, and the fundraising efforts that put the courts in place.
